Industry and Community Engagement

Whittlesea/Nillumbik Network Group
Darebin Forum

In 2008 Career Connections RMIT through consultation, looked for ways to improve and structure the two Industry Education Networks.

The results from the consultation process were:

•         The Whittlesea/ Nillumbik network to continue under the 2007 structure (i.e. holding
separate meetings), with the group expressing strong support in the value of meetings
relevant to  their own specific demographical issues, variety of industries and
           employment needs.

•         The Darebin network expressed its own specific requirements and intended purpose of
their network. They wanted to pursue alternative methods and structures to continue
their industry/ education linkages within the region.

The aim of this network is to develop effective program and communication with industry which meet the needs of schools and young people in their regions and to build relationships with local employers and improve understanding and communication between schools and industry.

One of the key successes of the Industry Education Network groups is that they meet with local industry representives (on a monthly basis).

In 2008, these groups provided the following guest speakers:

•         Vic Urban- Aurora Project (Dave Hamra- Community Development Manager)

•         Northern Melbourne Area Consultative Committee ( Tony Coppola- Executive Officer)

•         Northern Health (Ted Lipiarski- Human Resource Manager)

•        Yarra Valley Water- Epping Craigieburn Sewerage Project (Evelyn Yung-
         Project Manager)

•        Leader Newspaper (Nathaniel Bane- Deputy Group News Editor)

In 2008, the network spent time pursuing other courses of action. Career Connections RMIT will be conducting a forum in late 2008 which it aims to bring the education and industry sectors together to debate and discuss the following:

- What does industry of expect of schools in preparing young people for the workforce?

- What do schools expect of a workplace?

- What are the roles of industry and education in improving workplace literacy and work readiness skills of the next working generation?

The forum hopes to develop a better understanding of the issues faced by each group and to begin to develop and build sustainable partnerships around focus areas in 2009. Suggestions for action research will also be considered.
