What is SWL?
The Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) Program aims to
facilitate the provision of structured learning opportunities to
students in a real or simulated workplace.
This structured workplacement involves training and mentoring
that provides students with a broad understanding of the world of
work, and the opportunity to develop their technical and generic
employability skills.
In most cases the skills are assessed and the achievement of
competencies is recognised nationally by industry and education
systems.
The SWL Program involves students spending a period of time in
the workplace, usually ten days, either as a two-week block or on a
one day a week basis. During this time they demonstrate and enhance
skills they have acquired in the classroom. The students also
develop generic employability skills which are assessed by the
employer at the end of the placement.
Career Connections RMIT and SWL
Career Connections RMIT and Northern Melbourne VET Cluster
schools are strongly of the view that all VET students should
undertake 'Structured Workplace Learning' or a Work Placement. This
view has been endorsed by meetings of VET coordinators and
principals of schools in the Northern Melbourne VET Cluster. It is
also couched in the VET Cluster Memorandum of Understanding signed
by all VET cluster principals.
